Atari 8-bit (400 / 800 / XL / XE)

Atari's 6502 + custom coprocessors line (1979): ANTIC + GTIA for video (programmable playfield, DMA, display lists), POKEY for sound, keyboard and the SIO serial I/O. A very advanced architecture that foreshadowed Atari's arcade hardware. Standard 8-bit repair: recap, PSU RIFA (XL/XE), POKEY.

The architecture rests on three coprocessors alongside the 6502 — ANTIC, CTIA/GTIA and POKEY. When diagnosing, a purely video symptom points at ANTIC/GTIA; a symptom hitting sound AND keyboard AND serial port points at POKEY.

Why this matters in repair

Repair (technician)

  • Recap + RIFA: the XL/XE ("Ingot" brick) PSUs and their RIFAs smoke → replace → Recap.
  • Black screen: RAM / OS ROM / MMU / GTIA → substitution (often socketed on the 800).
  • POKEY: no sound / partially dead keyboard → replace the POKEY.
  • 400 keyboard: membrane → clean / replace.
  • SIO: peripherals not seen → SIO cable/port, drive PSUs.
  • Cartridge: contacts → clean.

XL/XE PSUs

The original bricks age badly (RIFA, regulation) and can over-volt the machine. Many prefer a reliable modern regulated supply to protect the computer.

Modernisation & mods — what to buy, how

XL/XE PSU: replace it BEFORE powering on

The original XL/XE supplies age badly and can over-volt (like the C64 "killer") → fries the machine. A modern regulated protected supply is essential before any power-up.

Modern storage (SIO bus) - SIO2SD / SDrive-Max / AVGCART 🟢: an SD drive on the SIO port → replaces the 810/1050 drive and the deck, .atr/.xex images (plug-and-play). - The!Cart 🟢: a multicart (thousands of titles) on the cartridge port; SIDE 2/3 🟢 = CF/SD.

RAM / OS - Ultimate 1MB 🟠: an internal 1 MB RAM + flashable OS/BASIC + PBI/IDE board → the reference "all-in-one" modernization (internal install, chip removal).

Video - UAV (Ultimate Atari Video) 🟠: a board giving clean S-Video/composite; Sophia 🟠 (DVI/RGB via a GTIA replacement) for digital output; OSSC/RGB2HDMI downstream.

Sound - Failing POKEY → replace 🟡; stereo mods (2nd POKEY) are documented 🟠.
