PS2 — MX4SIO / OPL (SD, HDD, network)¶
On the PlayStation 2, you often don't need a real ODE: thanks to the FreeMcBoot softmod, you launch games from an SD card (MX4SIO), a hard drive or the network, via Open PS2 Loader (OPL). Simple and reversible.

The winning combo: FMCB + OPL¶
- FreeMcBoot (FMCB): a memory-card softmod that unlocks homebrew at boot — no soldering. (See Softmods.)
- Open PS2 Loader (OPL): the launcher that reads your ISO images from:

MX4SIO: a microSD adapter that plugs into the memory card port → games on SD, very cheap.

HDD: on fat PS2 (network/HDD expansion bay, IDE or modded SATA).
- USB: slow (USB 1.1) but possible.
- Network (SMB): ISOs served from a PC/NAS.
MX4SIO = the poor man's ODE, no soldering
The MX4SIO (SIO2SD) turns the memory card port into an SD reader. Combined with FMCB + OPL, it's the cheapest, teardown-free solution — ideal for preservation without touching the iron.
Real optical ODEs¶
ODEs that replace the DVD drive also exist, but FMCB + MX4SIO/HDD covers most needs without opening the console. The DVD drive stays useful for reading DVD-Video and playing original discs.
Installation (summary)¶
- Install FMCB on a memory card (via an exploit / a pre-made card).
- Copy OPL + your ISOs onto the chosen medium (MX4SIO / HDD / network).
- Launch OPL from the FMCB menu, set the per-game compatibility mode if needed.
