PSIO / xStation (PlayStation)¶
Two quality ODEs for the PlayStation 1: the PSIO (module on the rear expansion port) and the xStation (RetroHQ) (internal, on the drive connector). No more tired laser, games on SD card.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| System | PlayStation (PSX/PSone depending on solution) |
| Type | SD ODE |
| Level | 🟡 (soldering for xStation; PSIO per model) |
| Reversible | ✅ |
PSIO (CybdynSystems)¶
- Plugs into the parallel expansion port at the back of fat PS1s (SCPH-100x/550x/700x — not the PSone, which lacks this port).
- A small internal switchboard links the PSIO to the motherboard (a few wires soldered per revision).
- MenuLoad menu, CUE/BIN images on SD.
xStation (RetroHQ)¶
- Internal, solders onto the CD drive connector → replaces the laser.
- Compatible with PSone and fat PS1.
- Polished menu, updates, selection screen.
PSone vs fat PS1
The PSone (SCPH-10x, compact) has no parallel port → PSIO ruled out, but xStation works. On a fat PS1, both are possible.
Installation (summary)¶
- Identify the model (fat vs PSone) and the revision.
- xStation: desolder/disconnect the drive, solder the ODE onto its connector.
- PSIO: fit the internal switchboard + module on the parallel port.
- Prepare the SD with images + menu.
- (Often paired) MemCard PRO for virtual saves, and native RGB for the image.
Before / after¶
| Criterion | Original PS1 | With ODE |
|---|---|---|
| Laser | worn (failure cause #1) | removed |
| Loading | slow | fast |
| Multi-game | physical discs | SD |

Review & corrections
How this space is used
Spotted a wrong value, an outdated procedure, a chip reference that does not match your board? Say so here, with what you observed (model, board revision, serial number, measurement). Every report is cross-checked against a source before anything changes — an unverifiable correction is published as “reported by …, not cross-checked” rather than silently applied.
Reading is open to everyone; posting requires signing in with Discord. Reports from the wiki's declared reviewers are handled first; anyone else's are read too, but go through a human before anything is changed.
