PC Engine ↔ TurboGrafx: region-free (HuCard)

Running Japanese HuCards (PC Engine) on an American TurboGrafx-16, and vice versa. Good news: there's no lockout chip — the "region" comes down to a reversed pinout on the cartridge. A simple adapter (or a small mod) is enough.

Why it's blocked (and why it's easy)

HuCards (JP) and TurboChips (US) are electrically identical: fundamentally the same console (see PC Engine). NEC simply reversed the pin order of the connector between Japan and the US to prevent imports — it's mechanical, not electronic security.

  • No CIC or lockout: nothing to "crack".
  • The only barrier is the mirrored key / pin order.

Region = mostly language

On most action/shmup games, "region" only changes the language of the screens (games run identically). The adapter is enough to enjoy the whole (very rich) JP library on a TG-16, or vice versa.

Installation (adapter, summary)

  1. Check the orientation of the HuCard (JP vs US) and the console model.
  2. Insert the adapter into the slot, then the HuCard into the adapter.
  3. That's it — no adjustment, no soldering.
