Region-free & lockout¶
Running games from other regions (and often switching 50/60 Hz) on a locked console. The lock mechanisms differ by manufacturer — hence very varied mods, from a switch to a chip replacement.

Zoom: the CIC (Nintendo 8/16/64-bit)¶
The CIC is an authentication chip: the console has a "lock" CIC that talks to the cartridge's "key" CIC. Without the right exchange, the console resets in a loop. Bypasses:
- Disable the console lockout (NES: pin 4 to ground → frozen, no more resets; bonus anti-flicker).
- Swap / universal key (N64/SNES): replace/spoof the CIC.
50/60 Hz: why it's linked¶
Many PAL games run at 50 Hz (slower, black bars). A 50/60 Hz switch forces 60 Hz → correct speed + full screen (if the game supports it). On SNES the switch acts on the PPU; on MD, on a region signal.
Installation (varies)¶
- Simple switch (MD/SMS/SNES): 2–3 wires to a front-panel toggle.
- CIC (NES/N64): cut a trace (pin 4) or replace the chip.
- BIOS consoles: modchip / region-free BIOS / homebrew (no iron).
