Frontlight / backlight (NGPC, WonderSwan & reflective handhelds)

Many late-90s handhelds have a reflective LCD (no lighting): superb battery life, but unreadable without good light. The frontlight mod (a light panel above the screen) — or an IPS/backlight replacement — makes the stock screen usable anywhere. Mostly concerns the Neo Geo Pocket Color and the WonderSwan.

Frontlight vs backlight vs IPS

  • Frontlight: you overlay a thin light panel (LED light guide) above the stock reflective screen. You keep the original LCD (so its look, its latency), just adding lighting. It's the historic NGPC/WS mod.
  • Backlight: hard on a reflective screen (no translucent layer) — often unsuitable as-is.
  • IPS/backlit replacement: recent kits swap the panel outright for a backlit IPS (sharper, brighter image) — the most polished route when a kit exists for your console.

WonderSwan: the SwanCrystal was already better

The SwanCrystal (2002) has a TFT screen far better than the original WonderSwan/WS Color. If you want screen comfort without a mod, that's the model to seek — otherwise frontlight/IPS on WS/WSC.

Installation (frontlight, summary)

  1. Open the console (suitable screwdriver), remove the screen carefully (fragile ribbons).
  2. Insert the frontlight panel just above the screen (no trapped bubble or dust — work clean).
  3. Wire the frontlight power (often a resistor + a tap on a power line; sometimes a small brightness potentiometer).
  4. Reassemble, test: even brightness, no light leak at the edges.

Dust & bubbles

A frontlight's worst enemy is dust or a bubble between the panel and the screen → a permanently visible blemish. Fit it in a clean environment, handle by the edges.
