Commodore 64 Games System (C64GS)

A keyboard-less, cartridge-only Commodore 64 (1990, Europe/PAL). Released to fight the consoles when the C64 was already 8 years old, at the same price (£99) as the full computer → an absolute fiasco: ~2,000 sold out of 20,000 produced.

It is hardware-identical to a C64C: the board is the end-of-life "short-board" C64 (85xx chips). Design flaw: most cartridge C64 games need the keyboard (if only to start) → unplayable on the C64GS. Combined with a tiny cartridge library (~28 games, 9 exclusive), the failure was total.

C64 power supply (the killer brick)

The original C64 PSU ages badly: when its 5 V regulator fails it sends an overvoltage that kills the chips (RAM, PLA, SID, VIC). Do not trust a period brick: measure 5 V unloaded, or switch to a modern regulated PSU with overvoltage protection (crowbar). This is THE cause of dead C64s.

  • Socketed chips: on the short-board many ICs are socketed → diagnose by substitution (RAM, PLA, SID, VIC, CPU, CIA). The PLA (906114) and the SID are frequent failures.
  • SID: the 8580 (5 V) or 6581 (12 V) depending on revision — mind the SID's supply voltage on a cross-swap.
  • Cartridge (expansion port) contacts: isopropyl clean.
  • Capacitors: recap if sound (SID) or video degrade.
  • Video output: A/V DIN (Luma/Chroma/composite) → clean S-Video/RGB is possible (see video mods).

Mods & preservation — what to buy, how

Modern PSU = absolute priority

Original PSUs age badly: the 5 V regulator can fail overvolted and fry the CPU/PLA/RAM in one go. Replace it with a modern regulated PSU with overvoltage protection (or add a 5 V fuse/crowbar protector) before powering the machine again.

  • Modern PSU 🟢: see above — the single most important mod.
  • Flashcart 🟢: Kung Fu Flash or EasyFlash — loads C64 games/carts from an SD in the cartridge port (with no keyboard on the C64GS, a menu-driven flashcart is ideal).
  • Video: native S-Video (luma/chroma) + composite via the A/V DIN → S-Video cable then OSSC/RetroTINK. No native RGB (the VIC-II doesn't produce it; RGB/HDMI mods are heavier, via a replacement VIC board).
  • Secondary recap + PLA replacement (SuperPLA) for the classic failure.
