Softmods (Wii, PS2, GameCube…)

Softmods unlock a console through software, with no soldering iron: homebrew, region-free, launching from USB/SD/network. Reversible and free, they're often the first thing to do on 6th/7th-gen consoles.

Systems Wii, PS2, GameCube, PSP, DSi…

Level 🟢
Reversible ✅ (uninstall possible)

The main softmods

Console Softmod What it brings
Wii Homebrew Channel (via LetterBomb / str2hax) + BootMii homebrew, USB Loaders, region-free, NAND backup
PS2 FreeMcBoot / FreeHDBoot homebrew, OPL (USB/HDD/network games), region-free — see PS2 ODE
GameCube Swiss (via exploit or SD Gecko) region-free, video settings, ISO launching (with GC Loader)
PSP CFW (custom firmware) homebrew, ISO on Memory Stick
DSi Unlaunch + homebrew apps, preservation

Why start here

  • No hardware risk (no soldering).
  • Reversible: you can return to the original state.
  • Unlocks region-free, homebrew, preservation (dumps, saves), and often loading from modern storage (USB/SD/network).

Wii: BootMii first

On Wii, the first step is to back up the NAND with BootMii: a safety net that lets you restore the console if something goes wrong.

Installation (general principle)

  1. Identify the console's firmware version.
  2. Apply the matching exploit (booby-trapped save file, web page, etc.).
  3. Install the homebrew channel / loader.
  4. Copy the apps (OPL, Swiss, USB Loader…) onto the medium (SD/USB).

The exact procedures are very well documented (up-to-date community guides); this wiki gives the principle, not the versioned step-by-step (which changes often).

Review & corrections

How this space is used

Spotted a wrong value, an outdated procedure, a chip reference that does not match your board? Say so here, with what you observed (model, board revision, serial number, measurement). Every report is cross-checked against a source before anything changes — an unverifiable correction is published as “reported by …, not cross-checked” rather than silently applied.

Reading is open to everyone; posting requires signing in with Discord. Reports from the wiki's declared reviewers are handled first; anyone else's are read too, but go through a human before anything is changed.
