Taito Z System¶
Taito's sprite-scaling pseudo-3D hardware (1987) — Taito's answer to Sega's super scaler: dual 68000 + scaled sprites for racing and rail-shooter games. Chase H.Q., Continental Circus, Night Striker, Ninja Warriors… Some games have the C-Chip.

The dual 68000 and sprite zoom give Chase H.Q.'s sense of speed (the "super
scaler" style à la Sega OutRun). Emulated in MAME (taito/taito_z.cpp).
The C-Chip (protection)¶
Chase H.Q., S.C.I., Continental Circus and others use the C-Chip → dumps and conversion: → Taito Z / H / X converts (C-Chip).
EPROM repair: 68000 program in 27C010 → game-by-game EPROM table (Z/H/X).

Modernisation & mods¶
The common ground for every JAMMA board
Video, power, control panel and upscalers depend on the cabinet rather than the board: everything is centralised in Modernising a cabinet. To run the board outside a cabinet (at home, on a display): supergun.
- Battery 🟢: a save battery is fitted (settings/counters/RTC). A leaking battery corrodes traces — check and replace it before it leaks → save batteries.
- Storage 🟡: the game lives in EPROM/mask ROM on the board. Changing or restoring a game means reprogramming the EPROMs (and, for a mask ROM, using a pinout adapter) → EPROM method.
- Media preservation: replacing the original storage, multicarts, ODEs and modern options by family → PCB preservation hub.
- Scan rate 📺: ~15.73 kHz / 60.1 Hz — standard resolution, a classic 15 kHz chassis is fine — the most common JAMMA case → tri-sync and upscalers.

Repair (technician)¶
- C-Chip on some games: an MCU + a per-game EPROM (donor / dump), not a battery.
- Dual 68000 (game + objects/road) + Z80/YM2610: a freeze = one of the 68000s / its RAM → separate diagnosis; the speed effect = sprite zoom (TC0100SCN customs).
- Sound: Z80 + YM2610 — diagnose the sound stage.
- Capacitors: recap sound + filtering. EPROM sockets: turned-pin socket.

How to read this table
Several values for one component = several board variants in this family (or several instances of the chip clocked differently). These frequencies are those of the clock signal at the component's input, not of its original crystal — on many boards the clock is divided down from a single master crystal.

Scope and limits
A schematic applies to the game and revision named. Within one family the general breakdown (buses, decoding, sound/video stages) carries over from board to board, but component references and custom chip pinouts do not transpose between titles. Use it as a map of the logic, not as a cross-reference table.

These settings apply to the game and revision described by MAME. One title may have several DIP sets depending on region or revision, and some systems use soft-dips (settings in memory, via the test menu) rather than physical switches. In case of a discrepancy, the board's silkscreen and the test menu are authoritative.

Lineage¶
Contemporary with the B/F2 (same YM2610 sound). A super-scaler family close to the Sega Super Scaler / X-Board. The H System (Recordbreaker, Syvalion) and X System (Superman, Gigandes) are detailed on the converts side.
