NEC's 32-bit console (1994), CD-ROM based, in a tower form factor (like a PC). Aimed at anime games / FMV, Japan only, a small catalogue — a commercial failure but a collector's curiosity.

Released late (1994) and without 3D acceleration just as 3D was exploding (PS1/Saturn): it bet on full-motion video, hence its failure. A very small library (~60 games), Japan only.

Expansions & saves

  • Internal save: BRAM memory backed by a battery (like the PC Engine CD) — a dead battery loses saves; replace it.
  • Backup memory card (FX-BMP): a save expansion in the rear expansion slot.
  • PC-FXGA: an ISA card version of the hardware, for development on PC-98/DOS — useful for preservation/homebrew.

Controllers & games

  • Controller: a 6-button digital pad (PC-FX-specific format), + a rear expansion slot (FX-BMP, cards).
  • Library: heavily visual-novel / interactive-anime oriented (Tokimeki Memorial, Sotsugyō II, Battle Heat, Team Innocent, Der Langrisser FX, Zeroigar…) — hence the weight on MJPEG video and the cold reception from a public wanting 3D.

Modernisation & mods — what to buy, how

Preventive recap is essential (leaking SMD)

Like the Duo, the PC-FX has SMD capacitors that leak and eat traces → a full recap + electrolyte cleanup on acquisition, before any other mod.

  • CD drive → ODE 🟡: an optical emulator (images from SD) → avoids the tired laser/belt; image your discs while they still read. → ODE mods.
  • Native RGB video 🟢: stock RGB output → SCART cable then OSSC / RetroTINK or RGB2HDMI (no internal mod).
  • Internal battery-backed save: check/replace → backup batteries.
  • Emulation: Mednafen (accurate PC-FX core) — the simplest route given the rarity and the 100% Japanese library.
