N64 digital (UltraHDMI / PixelFX)

The best possible image on Nintendo 64: you tap the digital video bus (before any analog DAC) and output pixel-perfect HDMI. Two families: the UltraHDMI (historic, discontinued) and the current PixelFX (N64Digital) range.

Technical principle

The N64 generates the image digitally in the RCP before converting it to analog. These mods intercept the colour bits directly on the bus → an FPGA shapes them and encodes HDMI:

  • No analog conversion in the chain → zero noise, exact pixels.
  • Deblur switchable (removes the N64's horizontal AA blur).
  • 240p / scanlines / scaling options depending on the kit.
  • Works on all revisions (unlike analog RGB, which stumbles on late boards — see N64 RGB).

The two families

Installation (summary)

  1. Open the N64, remove the board.
  2. Solder the ribbon/interposer onto the RCP pins (video bus + clock) — this is fine QFP soldering, hot-air station recommended.
  3. Fix the HDMI board and bring the connector out at the rear.
  4. Power 3.3/5 V from the board, flash the firmware if needed.
  5. Set deblur / format via the OSD or buttons.

Expert level

The tap is on very closely-spaced QFP pins. A lifted pad = damage. Reserve for those who master rework (or hand it to an installer).
