ODE — optical drive emulators

An ODE (Optical Drive Emulator) replaces the CD/DVD/GD drive of a console with an SD/USB card that presents game images as if it were the original drive. It's the modern preservation route for anything with an aging laser.

Why an ODE

Legality

An ODE is legitimate hardware. It provides no games: you use your own images (dumps of your discs). This wiki hosts no ROMs.

Choosing an ODE

  • Solderless preferably: many clip in place of the drive (GDEMU, Fenrir…).
  • Region/revision compatibility: check the model fits your console.
  • Beware of clones: GDEMU and Mega SD in particular are heavily cloned (variable quality and ethics) — prefer the original manufacturer.
