Replacing the PSU (PicoPSU / DreamPSU / MeanWell)

Many retro failures come from the aging power supply (dried-out caps, unstable rails). Rather than recapping endlessly, you replace the original PSU with a modern regulated, reliable module. Mostly concerns the Dreamcast, arcade cabinets/PCBs and various consoles.

Why replace rather than recap

An aged switch-mode PSU can: - have dried-out caps (noise, low rails, hot cut-outs), - run hot and age badly, - stay out of tolerance even after recapping.

A modern industrial module (e.g. MeanWell) brings stable regulation, protections (short-circuit, overvoltage) and silence.

The −5 V rail (arcade)

Generic 5 V/12 V supplies don't have a −5 V rail. Some PCBs (analog sound) need it → plan a small −5 V converter, otherwise no sound / distorted sound.

Installation (Dreamcast, summary)

  1. Open the DC, remove the original PSU block.
  2. Fit the DreamPSU/PicoPSU, wire the rails to the power connector.
  3. Feed it with a quality external 12 V adapter.
  4. The console runs cooler and gains reliability (ideal paired with a GDEMU).
